UnitedHealth has confirmed that the February 2024 ransomware attack on its Change Healthcare unit, attributed to the ALPHV ransomware gang, affected approximately 190 million people in the U.S.—nearly double earlier estimates. This marks the largest medical data breach in U.S. history, causing widespread healthcare system disruptions. Stolen data includes personal information (names, addresses, Social Security numbers), medical records (diagnoses, medications, treatment plans), and financial details. While UnitedHealth claims no misuse of data or exposure of electronic medical records has been detected, the hackers published some stolen information online, prompting Change Healthcare to pay at least two ransoms. The breach exploited a stolen credential lacking multi-factor authentication.
